The new and improved Asbury Park boardwalk
Asbury Park, a Jersey Shore beach town with a rich musical past, has recently revamped their boardwalk and is slowly making a new name for itself. As a Monmouth County resident, I’ve always had reservations about traveling to this beachside metropolis and after 22 years, I’ve finally made the trip.
2005 marked the beginning of the new Asbury era. Since then, many new shops, restaurants and bars line the walkway. Langosta Lounge, McLoone’s, and the new Aqua Restaurant and Bar (which I’ve been told is rumored to have fist pumping gurus at night) are among some of the more trendy destinations on the boardwalk. When it came time to choose a restaurant for my graduation dinner the first place that came to mind was Sirena’s on the Pier Village boardwalk in Long Branch. I pride myself in being an Italian food connoisseur (I would literally eat pasta for breakfast, lunch, and dinner if it was socially acceptable) as a result; I fell in love with Sirena Ristorante. If you’ve ever read the Star-Ledger from Memorial Day to Labor Day, you know Pete Genovese, commander of the venerable Munchmobile and all-around Garden State snack sherpa. At the beginning of the summer season, he named his favorite breakfast, pizza and ice cream at the Shore, and frankly, I’d like to respectfully disagree on his breakfast selection. It seems as though everyone is obsessed with our beloved Garden State lately. Us natives have known how wonderful our tiny state can be, but it seems like everyone else is jumping on the coat tails of MTV’s “Jersey Shore” success. Case in point, American Idol season 6 contestant Antonella Barba was spotted filming her new music video at none other than Belmar’s Bar A for her new single coincidentally called, “Jersey Girl.” The video has yet to be released but we’ll be sure to scope the scene for the shot wheel or infamous Albert Einstein look-a-like that we recognize as staples of Bar A. So it’s Saturday night and you need a responsible way to reach your favorite watering hole. You have a few options: 1. Recruit a designated driver. 2. Call a cab. 3. Take the train if you’re heading to Point Pleasant or north. 4. Walk. 5. Call a cab.
